To my fresher self,
It’s okay to be nervous, this is a new chapter in your life and one of the scariest but most exciting one. It’s okay to have some doubts but please, do not begin to doubt yourself because you are here for a reason, because you earned your place.
Go and meet new people; there are friends for life waiting to be made. You will meet people from all over the world, from different backgrounds and of all ages. You can’t pass up opportunities like that because every day you will learn something new from at least one person.
That society looks interesting, student media looks fun, and the Students’ Union looks cool – why not at least enquire? Do not write off opportunities before they even arise. Give everything a chance because you won’t know unless you try.
Feeling a little lost or overwhelmed after your first lessons? Email your tutors, they will be more than happy to help. Do not feel as if you’re bothering them because you are their student for the next three/four years, so just ask. Their advice will go a long way and you won’t forget it.
While you can, make sure you do enjoy yourself and have a good time! I know things aren’t normal right now but when these days pass, party when you can – but do not overdo it. Moderation is important. Remember, you’re at university to get that degree but again, find time to party and meet some awesome people! Oh and as a recommendation, if someone offers you a straight sambuca to drink, do not accept it!
Take a chance on yourself, remember to have fun, but most importantly remember to take this time in your life seriously and work as hard as you ever will.
